give up：放弃，认输，后面可接不定式，也可接动名词，意思不一样。
give up to do sth：放弃做某事，还没做就放弃了，for example：
Lucy have to gave up to attend the Piano Competition 最终不得不放弃钢琴比赛。（还没开始比）
give up doing sth：放弃做某事儿，做事的中途退出，for example：
It's very difficult for me to giving up smoking now.现在叫我戒烟太难了。
give up doing是正确用法，表示放弃做某事。举个例子：They give up striving for the first prize，but still struggle for a better goal to be themselves.她们放弃努力赢得第一名的奖项，但是仍然努力朝着成为她们真正的自己这样一个更好的目标进发。
give up 后接doing。give up意为放弃，后边的动词需要使用ing形式。这种动词与介词搭配的短语大多数都是要接doing的，比如 put off， depend on， pay attention to等。give up除了后接doing这个用法外，还可以直接接名词，表示放弃某物。或者在give与up的中间加it， them做宾语。
